Green Mother

Acrylic on Canvas Paper 12" x 16". bLink Magazine cover Fall 2001.

Green Mother is an illustration created for EarthLink's bLink Magazine Fall 2001 edition. At the time the magazine was on press, ciruclation was around 3.7 million, and distributed across the continental United States. Further, the feature story required additional illustrations as well, centered on geneaolgy and how to help find your family tree with tools online. The painting was inspired by Mexican Folk art, and six pregnant women who were friends of mine at the time of it's concept and proposal. Rendered in a style which portrays the figure of a mother with her newborn baby, the pair rest infront of a background of layered leaves. I wanted to portray the idea of the root and seed of the "family tree" at the same time. Green Mother recieved numerous emails both supportive and critical of it's appearence on bLink Magazine's cover. While I don't agree with all of the views that were sent in, I'm glad I was able to generate a reaction from the subscribers. While the style is not typical of the rest of my work, I utlized the same color theory with my paints. The acrylics for this piece are layered ontop of each other with several washes of color. This technique was particularly effective in making the greens almost electric in their brightness. Something the digital scan just can't catch. Though, if acrylics are layered ontop of canvas paper and not allowed enough time to dry, the paint will peel right off, and one finds themself right back at the base of the paper again with all of their hard work lost.
